Homogeneity in Cannabis

At True Labs for Cannabis, our New Jersey testing facilities perform homogeneity tests on each production batch of marijuana infused products (MIPs) like cannabis edibles, ensuring the highest standards of product safety and quality for patients and adult-use consumers alike.

What is homogeneity in cannabis?

A homogeneous cannabis product is one with uniformly and evenly distributed components. Homogeneity testing determines if the cannabinoid potency of infused consumable products is evenly distributed throughout a product and certifies that phytocannabinoids, such as THC, are not too highly concentrated in one area of a product. This is profoundly important for consumer safety and a positive experience, ensuring they get exactly what they expect every time, with accurate measures and dosage.

Do states regulate homogeneity in cannabis edibles?

Most states, including New Jersey, regulate cannabis product homogeneity. However, that’s not the only reason to test each production batch. Whether required by state law or not, a homogeneity test is critical to ensure product consistency, consumer trust, and a positive cannabis consumption experience.

Lack of proper homogeneity accounts for a large portion of why cannabis products fail regulatory tests. Case in point, the California Bureau of Cannabis Control has indicated that 68% of testing failures are due to improper potency labeling and/or homogenization.

How does True Labs for Cannabis perform homogeneity testing?

True Labs for Cannabis performs homogeneity testing by taking a sufficient number of samples from a product batch and running potency tests on each to determine the uniformity of cannabinoid concentrations throughout an MIP like edibles. These test results enable consumers to be confident in product safety and consistency.
